Welcome to the Instructional Video for Signing Friends – Poppy’s Christmas Eve

The video is aimed at parents, caregivers, teachers, support workers and other professionals to pre-learn the signs for this story.  Watch and practise as many times as you need till you feel confident with the Makaton signs.  Then go ahead and enjoy signing the story with your Makaton user.   We hope you have lots of fun learning Makaton together.

Underneath the instructional video, you will find a list of the concepts featured in this book and their source (Core or Resource vocabulary).  We have also listed all the signed used per page so you can see what we use. Or you can simplify and do fewer signs initially till you build up your fluency.  Don’t forget to sing and sign a some Christmas songs with Singing Hands to reinforce the signs that you’ve learnt in this book.  You can find lots of on our YouTube channel OR on the Singing Hands Christmas DVDs/downloads.  Happy signing!

Story Text and Sign Transcription

Poppy’s Christmas Eve

It’s Christmas Eve. Poppy and her friends are very busy. There are lots of things to do! (CHRISTMAS / NIGHT / P / FRIENDS / WORK [BUSY] / LOTS / TO DO)

Lola and Jack decorate the Christmas tree and turn on the fairy lights. (L / J / DECORATE / CHRISTMAS TREE / LIGHTS *MODIFY)

Poppy puts the Christmas cards by the window. (P / PUT / CHRISTMAS CARD *just do 2 part sign / WINDOW)

Next, the friends wrap some presents and put them under the tree.  “I wonder what is inside my present?” says Zack. (NEXT / FRIENDS / PRESENT / UNDER / CHRISTMAS TREE.  I / THINK / WHAT / MY / PRESENT / TALK / Z)

Ding! Dong!  What’s that noise?  Ah! It’s carol singers at the door. (WHAT / NOISE / SING / PEOPLE / DOOR)
